Planning for Retirement workshop to held in Rock Rapids

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa – Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach invites area resident to attend a two-session retirement preparation workshop on Thursday, May 3 and May 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the ISU Extension and Outreach office in Rock Rapids.

This “Writing Your Retirement Paycheck” workshop is ideal for those looking to retire within the next 10 years. It is designed to provide those approaching retirement with the information they need to be prepared to write their own paycheck. The workshop outlines key factors to consider prior to retirement and describes strategies for structuring retirement income.

“For many of us, our paychecks have been determined by someone else all our lives,” said Jan Monahan, human sciences specialist in family finance with ISU Extension and Outreach. “But in retirement, many of us are responsible to write our own paycheck. How will we know how big it should be?”

According to Monahan, who will lead the workshop, topics include health costs, Social Security, inflation, required minimum distributions, annuities and more.

“Individuals need to make their own decisions about retirement,” Monahan said. “But clear and non-commercial information is a necessary ingredient for decision-making, and that is what will be provided in the workshops.”

Monahan points out that even those who work with a trusted financial professional must ultimately make the decision themselves. A financial professional can suggest or recommend strategies or products, but it is the consumer who decides and then lives with the result.

Two meals, the training and materials for “Writing Your Retirement Paycheck” normally cost $25, but thanks to the generosity of the Lyon County Extension Council, it is being offered here for $10/person or $15/couple.

Register online at by Monday, April 30.
