Position: Horticulture Program Coordinator
Serving: Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Sioux County in Northwest Iowa
Job Location: Coordinator will be housed in an ISU Extension and Outreach office in one of the four counties
The Horticulture Program Coordinator’s role is to work with ISU Extension and Outreach to:
  • Provide Consumer Horticulture programming in Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Sioux counties,
  • Support ISU Extension and Outreach’s efforts to market and meet the growing demand for horticulture programs;
  • Maintain a strong Master Gardener volunteer organization;
  • Build positive working relationships with those involved with horticulture in each county. 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide ongoing support for the ISU Master Gardener program, including student recruitment, training site facilitation, and support for continuing education and volunteer hours. The Coordinator will also organize Master Gardener graduates and assist them in carrying-out projects and workshops in their communities and counties.
  • Provide leadership in answering horticulture questions from Extension clientele, including assistance in diagnosing tree, lawn, landscape plant diseases, insect problems, etc. May include traveling to sites within the four-county area. Support for diagnosis will be available from ISU Specialists.
  • Support the Rising Star Internship program in tasks related to horticulture.
  • Provide educational horticulture programming as requested.
  • Provide research-based horticulture-related information to clients.
  • Prepare press releases, public service announcements, newsletters and other material for use by the county, in coordination with the County Marketing Coordinator.
  • Be available for interviews or short presentations for TV or radio.
  • Seek additional resources through grants, contracts, contributions, and other sources.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Extensive horticulture experience, either for private enjoyment or for a commercial business.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with public speaking experience preferred.
  • Must be entrepreneurial, energetic, imaginative, and capable of functioning independently.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some weekends and evenings.
  • Basic computer skills required (Microsoft office, e-mail).
  • Ability to work positively and collaboratively with others, as well as organize groups and volunteers.
  • Must have access to dependable transportation.
  • High school diploma.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Trained/Active Master Gardener.
  • Experience educating others.
  • Formal horticulture training and/or related college credits.
Terms of Employment and Benefits:
  • Position may be full-time or part-time, depending on applicant. Wages based on qualifications and experience.
