The Southeast Iowa Agricultural Research Association, Research and Learning Center

The Southeast Iowa Agricultural Research Association is seeking donations to build a Research and Learning Center at the Southeast Iowa Research and Demonstration Farm near Crawfordsville.

To provide a quick background on the Southeast Iowa Agricultural Research Association, the association’s mission is to carry out educational efforts relating to the need for agricultural research in Southeast Iowa. The association, which is a 501(c)(3), owns the Southeast Iowa Research and Demonstration Farm and leases the research farm to the Iowa State University (ISU) Experiment Station. These two organizations work in cooperation to conduct field-based research trials. Additionally, the association partners with ISU Extension and Outreach to help disseminate this research-based information to enhance Iowa’s agricultural productivity and profitability, improve water quality, preserve natural resources, and engage the next generation in sustainable agriculture. To do so, events like field days and demonstrations and events targeted specifically towards Iowa’s youth are held. The association is comprised of 21 counties, including Benton, Cedar, Clinton, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Iowa, Jefferson Johnson, Jones, Keokuk, Lee, Linn, Louisa, Mahaska, Muscatine, Poweshiek, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello, and Washington. Each county has a member that sits on the association’s board of directors.

Currently, a small shop, hoop shed, and office/classroom building stand at the farm; however, these buildings are between 30 to 50 years old, with limited space and functionality. The proposed Research and Learning Center will support additional innovative projects at the farm as well as expand outreach efforts.
The goals of this project are as follows:

  • To provide an effective space to offer higher education to farmers, agricultural retailers, and others in the agricultural industry as well as host educational events specifically for youth.
  • To create an enhanced, hands-on learning environment that is out of the elements.
  • To offer a safe and useful space where other entities such as school agricultural programs (FFA) and community colleges may hold educational and outreach events at the farm.
  • To increase services for ISU researchers conducting field studies at the farm by providing a space for them and research farm staff to set up projects and work on equipment out of the elements.

The proposed construction is a 60’ x 80’ building featuring in-floor heat, ADA-accessible restrooms, and a kitchenette. The structure will offer a versatile, modern space for meetings, tours, educational and demonstration opportunities, and outreach events. The proposed Research and Learning Centerwill comfortably accommodate over 200 people, provide an indoor area for researchers to work on projects, and will provide additional space for farm staff to develop plans, work on projects, and repair equipment.
