NEW! Information:We have decided to proceed cautiously for the health and safety of our JCMG population and cancel/postpone the upcoming events listed below.

As of 3/20/2020:

Master Gardeners,
  • Thank you for your patience as we assess and implement changes affecting ISU Johnson County Extension and its programs given the increase in advisories issued in response to the spread of COVID-19. Effective (3/19/2020) the Johnson County Extension Office is closed to the public until April 4. Staff members are still working during this time but will be working remotely. We will have one staff member in the office daily, to check mail and voicemails, and keep up with essential operations. The best way to reach me is via email bielicke@iastate.edu or my personal cell phone 319-530-3689. If there are any updates to this notice, I will let everyone know as soon as I know.

Please read the information below thoroughly and know I will be in touch further in the coming weeks as more information arises.

  • Winter Potluck/Awards event (3/22/20) at the Extension office is CANCELLED. This is the event where 2018 students who have completed their 40 hours would have received their certificates, name badges, and pins, as well as other JCMG award recognitions. Please note that we appreciate all of the Master Gardeners' efforts and I will work to get your award items to you. We will also work to find a way to reschedule this activity at a later date or brainstorm a more creative ways to celebrate virtually with each other in the meantime.

  • Seed Share Event (3/29/20) at the Extension office is POSTPONED at this time and will hopefully be rescheduled for a later date. Information will be communicated as it becomes available. Linda is working on potential ways to disperse seeds to Master Gardeners for your use in case this event is fully canceled. Please watch your emails for more information.

  • JCMG Johnson County Hortline Face-to-Face office hours have been suspended. We will give notification once hours resume. In the meantime, please encourage folks to direct their horticulture questions to our JCMG hortline email johnsoncomg@gmail.com. Esther, hortline volunteers, and I will keep an eye on this email account and will respond as promptly as we are able.

  • ISU Hortline has suspended taking calls until further notice. However, Richard Jauron will be working to respond to horticulture emails sent to the ISU Hortline email hortline@iastate.edu .

  • ISU Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic will be doing as much distance diagnostics as possible at no charge. Please help direct questions to be emailed to the clinic email to pidc@iastate.edu and include pictures and as much detail as possible. They also have the Plant Sleuths Facebook Page which is a resource where we can crowdsource to help out clients as well: https://www.facebook.com/groups/plantsleuths/?ref=bookmarks .

  • JCMG Plant Sale & Flea Market (5/9/2020) With much thought it has been decided to CANCEL the sale at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. This decision was made with the interest of the health and safety of our volunteers, donors and supportive gardeners who look forward each year to the annual event, as well as public safety and restrictions for the planning and preparation between now and then. We welcome suggestions for alternative fundraising and will look into possibilities such as a late summer/fall sale. We will provide more information as it is available.

  • Other JCMG activities: No more than 10 people should be gathered and social distancing is very important. Meetings and activities should be suspended and alternate ways of working and planning should implemented. Utilize phone, email, and other forms of virtual resources to stay in touch and plan. If you have questions about an activity or need help with connecting at a distance please let me know and I will do my best to help.

  • Additional event CANCELLATIONS that I am aware of listed below however please double check with these outside groups by phone, email, or webpage to confirm before any actions are taken.

I will be working on my end to find additional ways to connect and find resources that may be helpful. Please take this time to self-educate, grow great home gardens to provide for your families and neighbors, and stay healthy and happy. I welcome thoughts and suggestions for additional remote activities, fundraisers, and plans for the future. Put your brainstorming hats on and still please keep notes on the hours & learning you are committing to better yourself and the community to report in the online hours reporting system.

We appreciate you being aware, assessing your individual situation, and keeping yourselves and other’s health in mind. We will do our best to make efforts to bring future opportunities as we are able. I will email more soon and thank you for all that you do. Please email me if you have any questions.
