2024 Summer 4-H/Fair Assistant

This position provides assistance to the 4-H Youth Development staff of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (ISUEO) in Winneshiek County. The position will support the County Youth Coordinator (CYC) and the Winneshiek County Extension Staff.


·       Support diverse research-based educational programming by following lesson plans and implementing a curriculum that supports positive youth development.

·       Work independently and with a team to assist with pre-county fair activities and setup, including fair entry process and preparation using FairEntry.com and 4-H Online2.0.

·       Assist with duties prior to, during, and following the Winneshiek County Fair; responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, weigh-in of all species of livestock, stalling of animals, documenting livestock shows, and fair book interpretation.

·       Assist with static and clothing, food, and communications events.

·       Assist with pre-fair and post-fair documentation and reporting.

·       Collaborate with staff to communicate program impacts, primarily through social media.

·       Maintain a close working relationship with the County Youth Coordinator and Winneshiek County Extension Staff, and keep all staff updated on programming.

·       Demonstrate professionalism as an ISU Extension and Outreach professional through image, public relations, and networking.

·       Assist with the preparation of displays and documentation for the Iowa State Fair.

·       Commit to serve the entire duration of the position: up to 400 hours beginning no later than June 1st, 2024.


·       An undergraduate freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior level college student with a major in an Extension related discipline, high school graduate, or high school senior.  

·       Strong organizational skills.

·       4-H background is preferred but not required.

·       Must be available to work July 7th-14th, 2024.

·       Strong written and oral communication and customer relation skills.

·       Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite Products, Internet, social media, and e-mail applications.

·       Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (mileage reimbursement is available).

·       Ability to pass background screening to meet the Child Protection and Safety Policy.

Additional Information

Flexible hours are required and may include some evening, weekend, and overnight work.
