Objective

The Muscatine County 4-H Program Coordinator is responsible for the direct support of the 4-H volunteers in Positive Youth Development, and coordination of county programs, events, and activities.  Through the development of volunteers, staff will empower youth to reach their full potential through Youth-Adult Partnerships and research-based experiences.

Responsibilities

Volunteer Development:

  • Identify and engage diverse audiences, both volunteers and youth. 
  • Implement a volunteer recruitment, training, supervision and retention strategy using Iowa 4-H Best Practices.
  • Assure compliance with risk management policies, including required training and screening of volunteers.
  • Apply teaching and learning strategies appropriate for diverse adult audiences. 

Organizational Support:

  • Serve as point of contact for the Muscatine County 4-H program.
  • Serve as lead coordinator of all county-wide 4-H activities (not just Fair).
  • Utilize Iowa 4-H technology, including 4-H Online and FairEntry, to manage program information.
  • Execute a communication strategy to volunteers, parents and youth, which may include emails, newsletters, social media posts, events or face-to-face contacts.
  • Collect, analyze, and share county data to ensure program effectiveness, communicate impact, and look for new programming opportunities relevant to county youth needs. 
  • Work with County Extension Director to ensure adequate financial resources are secured. 
  • Attend regional and state professional development meetings to stay current with programs and services.
  • Maintain knowledge of ISU Extension and Outreach 4-H educational programs and resources
  • Serve as the liaison to the Muscatine County 4-H Endowment Board.
  • Manage curriculum kit check-outs.
  • Represent Iowa State University, ISU Extension and Outreach, Muscatine County Agricultural Extension District and Iowa 4-H positively and professionally. 
  • Other duties as assigned by County Extension Director.

Partnerships:

  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to advance the Iowa 4-H mission and vision in Muscatine County. 
  • Promote 4-H state and county events and activities working with local partners and media.
  • Communicate effectively and build relationships with other extension staff, County Extension Council, Muscatine County Fair Board, County FFA Chapters, and community partners.

Club Development:

  • Develop and implement strategies to welcome, support and retain new and existing 4-H members and families.
  • Provide ongoing support and organizational assistance as requested by 4-H Clubs. 
  • Provide positive youth development programming for Clover Kids, County Council and through workshops and activities for 4-H members.
  • Intentionally build opportunities for first generation youth to experience 4-H programming.
  • Serve as lead coordinator of all 4-H activities at the Muscatine County Fair, including pre and post-fair activities and events.  Ensure communication of important County and State Fair dates.

Qualifications
  • Passion to work with volunteers and youth using a Positive Youth Development framework.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work with persons from various backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to work flexible hours. The successful candidate will be expected to successfully manage their schedule including some evening and weekend meetings.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, solve problems, and prioritize.
  • Self-motivated and ability to initiate work without direct supervision.
  • People-oriented and skilled in customer relations.
  • Dependable team player, punctual and detail-oriented.
  • Appearance, attitude, and conduct conducive to a professional work environment.

Ability to lift 25 pounds including files, books, stacking chairs, moving tables, etc

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or a combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. 
  • Knowledge of volunteer management and Positive Youth Development.
  • Experience organizing events and activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Programs, web design/editing, cloud-based storage systems, and teleconferencing systems.
  • Successful completion of a background check within the ISU Extension and Outreach policy.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
