Website Development

ISU Extension IT maintains the servers used by most of Extension's web sites. In addition to the main site at www.extension.iastate.edu, we manage the hardware that runs Ag Water Management, Conference Planning and Management, Iowa Association of County Extension Councils, and many other virtual sites.

The EIT Web Development team provides the following services:

  • New website developments
  • Upgrades to existing websites
  • Website Hosting
  • Domain Name Hosting (pending approval by ITS)
  • Standalone Web Applications
  • Training for Content Editors
  • Website Accessibility Training and Support
  • Consultations on website improvements

EIT currently uses Drupal 7 CMS (Content Management System) to create websites for clients.  In addition to Drupal 7, we've implemented the Luggage component built by Biology IT.  Though Drupal 6 is currently an unsupported platform, there are still websites running on the Drupal 6 CMS platform.

EIT is currently in the process of configuring the Drupal 8 platform for use across the organization.

Objectives of the Drupal 8 platform:

  1. Websites meet accessibility standards
  2. Websites are responsive for mobile and tablet use
  3. Websites are focused on updated and relevant information for the public enhanced by integrating existing ISU Extension and Outreach online resources
  4. Websites follow brand marketing guidelines
  5. Content editing is easier and streamlined with a minimalist approach

Drupal 6 web editors can find tutorials and training information on the Moodle Self-Guided Training Course or on the Drupal 6 Tutorials page.

Drupal 7 web editors can find tutorials and training information on the Moodle Self-Guided Training Course or on the Drupal 7 Tutorials page.
