Security Updates (August, 2015)

  • Encryption - The university's goal is to have all laptops encrypted by the end of the 2015 calendar year.  Since January 1, we've been encrypting all new laptops.  We've worked with program areas to encrypt laptops when staff are in for in-service.

In addition, if staff call ahead, they can drop off their computer to be encrypted in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon.  We ask that they call ahead so that we can be sure that it gets done in a convenient time frame.  There's no charge for this.

After fair season, we'll look at what remains to be encrypted and work out a plan for completing this project.

  • Identity Finder - Identity Finder is a program that will eventually be installed on all ISUEO computers.  Identity Finder scans for certain types of restricted information: credit card numbers, driver's license numbers, social security numbers and passport numbers.  This allows your staff to delete information they don't need and to securely store information they do.

We are in the process of running Identity Finder on servers and testing the installation and remediation instructions for running it on laptops and desktops.  Currently the goal is to scan web servers, file servers, and administrative systems on campus by the end of the 2015 calendar year.

There will be a webinar on Identity Finder in October.

  • Multi-Factor Authentication - Multi-Factor Authentication is when you need at least two pieces of information to log into your account.  For example, in addition to your password you also need a code, interaction with a phone app, or a physical device, etc.

ISU will be adding multi-factor authentication to Net-IDs and Access Plus logins.  This is currently in testing.  There will be multiple ways to authenticate and you will not need a smartphone if you don't already have one.
