Encryption - The university's goal is to have all laptops encrypted by the end of the 2015 calendar year. Since January 1, we've been encrypting all new laptops. We've worked with program areas to encrypt laptops when staff are in for in-service.
The university policy on password sharing is very clear. Do NOT share your passwords with anyone. You should also always be sure to use a strong password and change it regularly (at least once a year). It's also worth a reminder that you should never give your password out over the phone or on an unknown website. Be sure to check the URL (at the top of the browser window) to be sure you're at the web site you expect.
One of the recommendations as we adopt better security practices is that we share sensitive documents through CyBox rather than as email attachments
Most modern copiers have harddrives which store a copy of the file you're copying. This can become an issues when a new copier is purchased and the old copier is taken away.
Iowa State University adopted a new six-point security plan last year. Part of that plan includes whole-disk encryption for laptops. If you have an enterprise class laptop (Dell Latitude) that you use for work at ISU then it will need to be encrypted.
On September 4, 2015, Extension IT released information regarding Iowa State University's whole-disk encryption plan for laptops. As of October 29, 2015, Extension IT staff have visited 16 out of the 20 regions and encrypted more than 800 laptops. If you have not had an Extension IT staff member in your region yet, you may expect them within the next month.
Most campus staff computers have already been encrypted as well. There are a few remaining departments remaining to be completed.
Today EIT began the migration to the new MyFiles data system for our shared drive paths. The goal of the change was to be as seamless as possible so users could still retain access to their shared drives at the start of work this morning. If there are any issues that you notice, please don’t hesitate to call the hotline at 515-294-1725 for assistance.
NOTE: All machines will need to be rebooted. If you have not done this and are noticing problems, please reboot the machine as a first troubleshooting step.
As has been the case since 2009, the university will implement a partial shutdown between Christmas and New Year's. The last working day before the partial shutdown will be Thursday, December 22. The first day back will be Tuesday, January 3rd.
