AMES, Iowa — Soccer, baseball, tennis, golf — youth sports are big news in many communities and a big part of life for many families. But whether children’s experience of sports is good or bad depends in part on their parents’ involvement and attitude. In June, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is sponsoring an interactive webinar to help parents do their part to make sure their children’s experience with sports will be positive.
The free webinar, Provide Positive Sports Experiences for Kids, is Thursday, June 13, 8-9 p.m., and features ISU Extension and Outreach family life specialists Donna Donald and Lori Hayungs. Advance registration is not required.
“Parents make decisions with their children about when to start a sport, what sports are a good fit, whether to play individual or team sports and how much of the family resources to invest,” Donald said. “Positive parent involvement is crucial to help children develop an active lifestyle and keep the focus on fun.”
“We’ll discuss the benefits of sports for children and youth, but we’ll also take a look at the pitfalls and negatives when sports become more than fun. We’ll examine competition and the role it plays in children’s sports experiences,” Donald added.
The webinar is part of the Science of Parenting, www.scienceofparenting.org, a resource from ISU Extension and Outreach sharing research-based information to help parents rear their children.
Participation in the webinar is easy and convenient, Hayungs said. Webinar attendees may participate from any computer with Internet access. Participants will hear the presenters through their computer speakers and will have the opportunity to interact with the presenters and other attendees using a chat box in the webinar meeting room.
Prior to the webinar, participants should make sure their computer meets the minimum computer requirements, Hayungs said. “Visit our webinar connection page to test your computer’s ability to participate in the webinar. If the diagnostic test finds that you don’t have the required software, you will be automatically provided with a link to the free download.”
