Iowa farming may change forever with the increased use of high tunnels. These simple, plastic-covered, solar-heated structures offer many benefits to farming – some benefits that common row crop vegetable farming cannot provide. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has released a new publication that describes the cost benefits of high tunnel farming.

The course, the first step in becoming a certified Iowa Community Tree Steward, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday evenings beginning Aug. 2.

Registered dietitians have a new source for continuing education on safe food preservation. Preserve the Taste of Summer, a research-based program from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, has been approved for up to 20 continuing education units from the Commission of Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

A field day highlighting Iowa State University fruit and vegetable research is planned for July 23 at the ISU Horticulture Research Station near Gilbert. Organizers say the field day will be of interest to commercial producers, small-scale growers, master gardeners and home gardeners.
