ISU Extension & Outreach Farm Management Specialist, Charles Brown is conducting farmland leasing meetings across the region in July and August. The discussion will focus on various methods to determine a fair 2022 cash rental rate and the importance of good tenant/landlord communications. In addition, a brief economic outlook will be presented along with a look at farmland prices.

Renewed interest in carbon markets and carbon credit trading is quickly finding its way to the farm. In an effort to provide updates and answer questions, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will hold a public webinar Aug. 11 from 1-3 p.m.

Most farmers in Iowa are seeing a significant increase in what they pay for land rents this year. According to the “Cash Rental Rates for Iowa 2021 Survey," which is conducted annually and available in the May Ag Decision Maker, rates have increased an average of 4.5%, an increase of about $10 per acre, for a total per-acre rent of $232.

The Newly updated "Livestock Enterprise Budgets for Iowa" and "Livestock RIsk Insurance Plans for Cattle Producers" from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are available to help livestock producers track their cost of production and work through price insurance options.

Statewide Resources

  • Agricultural economics and business resources for farm business decision makers.

  • Coordinating education programs and service for beginning farmer efforts statewide and assessing the needs of beginning and retiring farmers. Providing support in financial management and planning, legal issues, tax laws, and many more services.

  • A look at the value of land in Iowa through annual survey results and additional resources for decision makers.

  • Providing timely, critically objective information to producers, professionals and agribusinesses concerning the application of important developments in agricultural law and taxation and a primary source of professional educational training in agricultural law and taxation.

  • One-on-one financial counseling, computerized analysis of the farm business, and referral to other extension programs or outside services that may be useful in farm financial planning.

  • The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm, Food and Enterprise Development Program supports value-added agriculture enterprises, businesses and regional food systems through research, education and community engagement.

  • On a mission is to improve the quality of life in Iowa by providing research-based educational programs that expand agricultural enterprise, improve natural resource management, and support the community of women in agriculture. 

  • The Iowa Pork Industry Center promotes efficient pork production technologies in Iowa, maintains Iowa's pork industry leadership and strengthens rural development efforts.

  • The Iowa Beef Center works to develop and deliver the latest in research-based information to improve the profitability and vitality of Iowa's beef industry.
