Summer Explorations

Fun and adventure in one endless summer, what more could you ask for?   Listed below is our lineup of 41 Summer Explorations (with multiple locations offered) designed for hands-on educational learning for all ages of youth.  You must use the registration form (found below) to sign up for events.

When: Wednesday, May 31, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM

Who: 4-8 grades (grade just completing)

What: Get your hands on an engine and tear it apart to see how engines work. Learn what is on the inside of a motor and what makes them function.

Where: GHV High School Shop

Cost: $5

When: Thursday, June 1 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Who: K-6 grades (grade just completing)

What: Plant your own flower and veggie. Learn how to take care of it while it grows into a beautiful flower or delicious vegetable for fair. We will also go over how to exhibit flowers and vegetables at the fair.

What: Create a crazy masterpiece with squirt guns!

Who: 2 - 8 grades (grade just completing)

What: Discover how quickly corn grows and learn how to identify the age of a corn plant. Plant your own corn and take it home to care for it during the summer. Return your tall corn to the fair to show off how much it has grown and win prizes.

What: Enjoy creating your own fabric flowers and never have to water them or see them wilt. 

Where: Garner @ Hancock County Extension Office. Britt @ Britt Municipal Building.

What: Explore camping outdoors with smores, hotdogs, fire starting, and fun with friend. Parents welcome.

Where: Elwood Sherwod Park Shelter- 2185 120th St., Goodell, IA

Cost: $10, includes supper.

Who: K - 2 grades (grade just completing)

What: Come learn the art of making beautiful and fun Jarcuterie! We will be making your very own jar full of treats. You'll want to get practiced up so that you are ready for the charcuterie board competition at the Hancock County Fair!

Where: Hancock County Extension Office

Who: 4-12 grades (grade just completing)

What: Photograph letters around Garner to make a 6 letter word of your choice. Then, return to the Extension Office to edit, print your letters, and finish making your sign. 

Where: Drop-off at Central Park in Garner, pick up at Extension Office.

Who: K - 3 grades (grade just completing)

What: Use cool colors of blue to white to create your very own world down under the sea with a local artist. 

Where: Tourist Park, Garner

Cost: $10

What: Explore rockery by making your very own rocket. Choose to launch your rocket or keep it to exhibit at the fair.

What: Build your own 3D sculpture with Missy Huling. We will also learn about art principals, elements of design, and how to exhibit your beautiful creation at the fair.

What: Interested in electricity and how it works? Make your very own lamp and learn from a local electrician the ins and outs of simple electrical current. 

Where: Britt Municipal Building

What: Build your own wood planter stand. Learn about safety when making wood projects and how to exhibit a woodworking project at the fair.

What: Do you think you can create and make a meal fro your family with just $11? We will plan a meal, purchase the ingredients, and make the meal for you to try!

Where: June 20: Hancock Co. Farm Bureau, 65 State St., Garner. June 21: GHV High School.

What: Build your own pasta flower arrangement piece by piece. Pasta flowers will be displayed in your own decorated flower pot.

What: Create your own patterned canvas bag using Sharpies and pillowcases using tie-dye supplies. Learn about color combinations and making your own patterns. Discover how color reacts when put onto fabrics.

What: Make your very own DIY skin care products! Enjoy a relaxing whipped sugar rub, shower melts, lotion, and more!

What: Explore the world of black/white and pencil shading when attending this workshop with a local artist. 

Where: Tourist Park, Garner

What: Use paint sample cards to create your own stained glass collage. You will also learn about color hues, shades, and complementary colors.

What: Interested in succulents and their care? Here is your chance to explore the world of succulent plants, their care, and how to start new plants. We will also be creating your very own self-watering planters!

When: Thursday, July 6 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM

Who: 3 - 12 grades  (grade just completing)

What: Create your own flower arrangement while you learn about how to exhibit flowers at the fair. Ellen Tusha will be teaching us how to arrange cut flowers in vases. Take how your beautiful arrangement.

What: Let's take a trip to Italy for a few hours and make some pizza and cannoli's! You will have the opportunity to make your own personalized pizza. Working with yeast and kneading the dough. Don't forget about dessert! 

Where: GHV High School

Who: 6 -12  grades (grade just completing)

What: Students will arrive at Stellar Industries, start out with a tour, and see how robotics are used in welding. Program a collaborative weld robot to build a creation and take it home. 

Where: Stellar Industries: 380 West 3rd St., Garner, IA 

Cost: $5

When: Tuesday, July 11 from 1:00 -2:00  PM

Who: K-3 grades (grade just completing). 

What: What does it mean to be a vet? How do you take vitals of your pets? What are common pet diseases? Learn all this and more by touring the Garner Vet Clinic and learning from the experts. 

Where: Garner Veterinary Clinic, 435 US Hwy 18, Garner, IA

What: Who doesn't like donuts? Come and draw/paint a picture of your favorite breakfast food! You will be able to use different techniques to create your piece of art donuts!

Where: Tourist Park, Garner

Cost: $10

Who: 3 - 12 grades (grade just completing)

What: Find the perfect outfit under $20 for the occasion of your choice at local second-hand stores. Learn about current trends, how to know quality, and what to pair together. Practice your modeling skills so you are ready to model at the county fair!

Where: Pick-up and drop-off at Hancock County Extension Office

Cost: $20, will be used to purchase your outfit.

When: Friday, July 14 from 1:00 -3:30 PM (both locations) 

Who: K - 8 grades (grade just completing)

What: Try your hand out at making soft pretzels and dipping sauce. We will make a salty after-school snack, or a sweet breakfast option.

When: Sunday, July 15 from 1:30 - 5:30

Who: 3 - 8  grades (grade just completing)

What: Attend the Brick Street Theatre's performance of Brigadoon, a love story about an enchanted city and making a choice to stay for love or return to regular life. After the performance, meet the cast and see behind the curtain. How do they set the stage? How do sounds and lighting enhance the show? What does on that we don't see to make a production a success? 

Where: Boman Fine Arts Center: 225 John K Hanson DR., Forest City, IA 

Cost: $15, includes student admission.

What: Navigate around a crime scene and see if you can solve the crime. Experience what goes on behind a crime scene with Sheriff Rob Gerdes.

What: Discover what makes a good bubble. Can you fit inside a bubble? How long can bubbles last? Can you make an unpoppable bubble?

What: Interested in construction? What to learn more about trucks of the trade? Join us to explore the construction industry with a local general contractor.

What: Our first stop in our annual field trip is at Aldrich Tree farm to see how Christmas trees are prepared during the year. Next, we will be following the life of a pig from birth to harvest, as well as how corn gets from the field to the critter

What: Come and explore Corteva's seed plant and learn about the process of raising and producing seed corn. Then, explore a seed corn field learning about the corn plant.

What: Investigate eyes and how they work. How does eye doctor equipment work? Learn how to become an eye doctor and discover what eye doctors see.

What: Do you like dirt? Explore excavating with us! See backhoes and excavators at work. Ask questions of the operators and be able to climb inside real equipment.

What: Build your robot so it can run a mission. Code our Spike Prime robot bricks to successfully complete a mission of your choosing from the FLL robot table missions.
