2019 Summer Explorations

A lifetime of fun in one endless summer.  Come and join us for a summer of fun, excitement, new adventures, and explorations.  Listed below is our line up of 35 Summer Explorations designed for hands-on educational learning for all ages of youth.  You must use the registration form (link upper right) to sign up for events.

 

NATURE AT  NIGHT
DISH TOWEL CROSS STITCH
When:    Friday, May 31 from 5:30—9:30 PM
Who:      K—3 grades  (grade just completing)
What:     Learn to safely start a campfire, cook your own
                supper, and experience a guided “night” hike.
                Parents are welcome to stay and join us.
Where:   Pilot Knob shelter house, 2148 340th Street,
                Forest City, IA 50436
Cost:      $10, includes supper.
RSVP:     Friday, May 24. Space is limited to 50.
When:    Friday, June 7 from 9:30—11:30 AM
Who:      5—12 grades  (grade just completing)
What:     Make your very own cross stitch dish towel.
Where:   Britt Public Library
Cost:      $10

WOODEN WREATH
TWINS STADIUM & COMO ZOO
When:    Friday, June 7 from 1:00—3:00 PM
Who:      3—12 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Join us in personalizing a 14” wooden door wreath!
              You will have a choice of designs.
Where:  Hancock County Extension Office  
Cost:     $10
RSVP:   Friday, May 31. Space is limited to 15.
When:    Monday, June 10 from 7:30 AM—8:30 PM
Who:      6—8 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Tour Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins.
              Discover the science of baseball and get your turn in
              the batting cage! Explore the Como Zoo &
              Conservatory. Como Town amusement park is a pay
              on 
your own option for those who wish to participate.
Where:  Meet at Hancock County Extension Office      
Cost:     $15. Bring your own sack lunch, souvenir money,
              and money for fast food supper.
RSVP:   Friday, May 31. Space is limited to 40 (2 counties).

WIRE SCULPTURE
MUSIC IN THE PARK - FULL
When:    Monday, June 10 and
              Tuesday, June 11 from 1:00—3:00 PM
Who:      4—12 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Join local art enthusiast Missy Huling to create a
              one of a kind wire sculpture. This would be a great
              visual arts project to take to the county fair or open
              show. 
Where:  Hancock County Extension Office
Cost:     $10

JEWELRY MAKING
WELD IT WORKSHOP -  FULL
When:    Wednesday, June 12from 2:30—4:00 PM
Who:      4—8 grades (grade just completing)
What:     You’ll be in style this summer with these fun tear
               drop earrings and pendent that you design on our                   Cricut design space.  
Where:   Hancock County Extension Office 
Cost:      $10
RSVP:    Friday, June 7. Space is limited to 15.

SCREEN T-SHIRT DESIGN
MAGAZINE RACK WOODWORKING
When:    Thursday, June 13, 10:00—11:00 AM
Who:      2—12 grades  (grade just completing)
What:     Design your own screen print T-shirt.  Follow the
               process from idea, to computer, to print out, to
               shirt.  Learn about all the ways shirts can be made.
              Winning designs will be picked
or incorporated
               together to the T-shirt made at the workshop.
Where:   Gifts Sew Sweet Print Shop, Britt 
Cost:      $15, includes T-shirt.
RSVP:    T-shirt sizes and designs (if desired) must be
               submitted by Friday, May 31 with registration. 
               Space is limited to 20.  
When:    Thursday, June 13 from 2:00—5:00 PM
Who:      4—12 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Make your own magazine rack and learn how to use
               basic woodworking tools.
Where:   GHV High School
Cost:      $20, includes finished magazine rack.

JUNIOR OVERNIGHT CAMP
BEGINNING PHOTOGRAPHY
When:    Check in: Sunday, June 16, 6:00 PM
Check Out: Monday, June 17, 5:30 PM
Who:      4—6 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Sleep in tents, cook over  a campfire, canoe, fish,
               and swim.
Where:   Crystal Lake Park, 1045 320th St. 
Cost:      $20, includes meals and activities.
RSVP:     Friday, June 7. Space is limited to 36 (2 counties).
When:    Tuesday, June 18 from 1:00—2:30 PM
Who:     4—8 grades  (grade just completing)
What:     Explore Garner and find the perfect shot.  End at
              North Iowa Design to print 
your favorite picture and
               have a finished 
project for fair. 
Where:   Start at the Hancock County Extension Office and
               pick up at North Iowa Design, 435 State Street,
               Garner.  
Cost:      $10, includes  printed picture.

LIGHT IT UP
LEATHER WALLET
When:    Tuesday, June 18  from 3:00—4:30 PM
Who:      4—12 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Learn how to complete an electrical circuit and
               make your very own lamp.
Where:   Hunt’s Electric, 270 Diagonal St NE, Britt 
Cost:      $15
RSVP:     Friday, June 7.  Space is limited to 15.
When:    Wednesday, June 19 from 1:00—2:30 PM 
Who:      4—8 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Make your own wallet using the Cricut machine.
               You will leave with a completed project!

               expert tips and learn tricks from local
master,

               tier flower planter! Come and personalize your pots

               plant your flowers of
choice.

               where you’ll be making a balloon dog
and sword.

you, it’ll be
              a popping good time!

AN AFTERNOON WITH PETS - FULL
YOGA IN THE PARK
An Afternoon with Pets Full
When:    Tuesday, July 9 from 1:00—2:00 PM
Who:      K—3 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Join us for an hour of fresh air and yoga! You are
               welcome to bring a yoga mat if you have one!
Where:   Tourist Park, Garner
Cost:      $5

DAY AS A DOCTOR
THE REAL HEREOS
When:    K—2 grades, Wednesday, July 10 
                      from 8:00 AM—3:00 PM
               3—5 grades, Thursday, July 11 
                      from 8:00 AM—3:00 PM
Who:      K—2 grades & 3—5 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Spend the day as a doctor, tour the hospital, get
               your 
own stethoscope, dress like a surgeon, learn
              about your 
body, and more!
Where:   Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt 
Cost:      $15, includes lunch and snack.

JR. FIRST LEGO LEAGUE

What:     Play with LEGO’s while learning all about space.

Who:      Anyone who is showing livestock at the fair. 
What:     Brush up on your showmanship before fair! Come get
               a few 
tips and pointers from expert showman for all
               species.

               Each species will practice in/near their barn.

GARNER SUMER ARTS PROGRAM

               K—2 grades from 1:00—2:00 PM
               3—5 grades from 2:30—3:30 PM
Who:      K—2 & 3—5 grades  (grade just completing)
What:     We are partnering with Clear Lake Arts Center to
              bring you the Garner Summer Arts Program. Each
              day youth will be exposed to a historic artist. We will
              learn about a variety of different art mediums
              throughout the week and go home with several
              artist inspired artworks.

What:     Have you ever wondered how dentists see cavities?
               And how do they fix them? Come find out when Dr.
               Amy and Dr. Bre from Tesene, Maurer, and Maurer
              Dental teach you all there is to know about dentistry.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE BUILD & REFRESH
 
When:    Thursday, August 15—Friday, August 16, 
               from 6:00—8:00 PM
Who:      3—7 grades (grade just completing)
What:     Build the new mission pieces for the 2019—2020
              season, and 
freshen up on your coding skills.
