Free Tax Preparation Offered

Temporada de actualización de impuestos por ingresos.

All tax work is done by appointment.  For Webster City appointments, call 515-297-3717 to schedule your appointment.  During the week, tax preparation is available at the Webster City Senior Center.  Saturday sessions will be held at Hamilton County Extension (311 Bank Street).

In Ellsworth, the tax clinic will be held on February 10.  Contact the Ellsworth Public Library to make an appointment (836-4852).

Barb Wollan, ISU Extension specialist and tax volunteer coordinator encourages workers who do not have bank accounts to open a savings account before they file their taxes.  “With a bank account in place,” she comments, “you can receive your refund quickly through direct deposit.”  Taxpayers who use reloadable prepaid cards should be sure to bring along the routing and account numbers for their card.
Wollan particularly encourages families who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to take advantage of the free tax preparation.  “The EITC offers low and moderate income working families a valuable opportunity to improve their financial situation.  By avoiding tax and loan fees, these families can put 100% of those funds to use in ways that build financial security and help them reach additional financial goals.”
Most taxpayers with income reported on W-2 or 1099 forms can have their returns done by the volunteers.  Volunteers do not prepare returns farm or rental income, or in certain other complex situations.  Taxpayers with business or self-employment income can be served if or rental income, or in certain other complex situations.  Taxpayers with low to moderate incomes are eligible – anyone up to $44,000 and families with two or more children up to $54,000.
