Farmland Leasing Meeting August 13

REMINDER:  Contractual changes to agriculture land leases must be in writing and notified prior to September 1!

An in-person farmland leasing meeting will be held at the Lakin Community Building in Malvern on Thursday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. 
The Lakin Community Building is located on the Mills County Fairgrounds at 61321 315th Street on the south end of Malvern.  The facility offers plenty of space to accommodate physical distancing, an important factor in managing COVID-19.  Face coverings are encouraged, but not required.
The meeting will be led by Patrick Hatting, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Farm Management Specialist.  Topics will include:

  • Farmland ownership and tenure in Iowa
  • Cover crop research and methods to implement in leasing agreements
  • Current cash rental rate and land value survey results
  • Methods for determining fair rental rates for 2021
  • Legal aspects of farmland leases, including strategies for writing and terminating a farm lease, partition law changes
  • ISU Extension web-based and other resources
  • Agriculture market updates

The workshop will last approximately 2 hours.  The registration fee is $20 per person or $30 per couple and will include a 100-page leasing arrangement book.  Registration is required by Tuesday, August 11th.  To register, call the Fremont County Extension Office at (712) 374-2351, or the Mills County Extension Office at (712) 624-8616.

ISU Extension and Outreach is also offering a webinar for those who are unable to attend in person due to conflicts or health concerns.  The statewide webinar will take place on Tuesday, August 25 from 9-11 a.m.  The webinar presenters will be Chad Hart, Wendong Zhang, Alejandro Plastina and Kristine Tidgren.  The cost for the webinar is $10.  When choosing this option, the leasing arrangements book may be purchased through your local Extension Office for an additional $10.
