I had so much fun giving these workshops! The workshops consisted of 5 fun activities pertaining healthy eating and focusing on fruits and vegetables. Each workshop started with an introduction activity, “I’m Going on a Picnic”. The youth selected a fruit or vegetable that started with the first letter of their first name. They would say “My name is [name], and I am going on a picnic. I am going to bring [fruit or vegetable].” The whole group would repeat their name and what they were bringing on the picnic.
The last few weeks have been busy as Jade and I travel throughout our three counties and help them with various tasks that allow us the opportunity to spread information about our wonderful local foods/producers! Hello again! Another day means another Rising Star adventure! As the weeks go by, we continue to learn more and more about local foods and producers. This week we got the chance to promote them! We were at the Sioux Center Farmers Market on Wednesday June 15 to serve up some local veggies! We call these “Fun with Food Tasting” because its a fun way to try new foods and recipes.
For my individual project I am preparing Zippy Zucchini Salad for adults and children to try while they wait or on their way out of the clinic. It contains zucchini, tomatoes, green pepper, and green onion with a vinegar, sugar, and olive oil dressing on top. I also have hand-outs of the recipe in English and Spanish and a list of the farmers’ markets in the 6 counties that currently accept WIC checks to be used to buy fresh produce.
This week you will be hearing from me, Lauren the Region 5 intern. This week Hannah and I did a number of food demos in various locations throughout Northwest Iowa.
