Little Hands Garden

This past week the Region 1 Interns helped the Little Hands Childcare and Preschool plant their own raised bed garden.  Margaret Murphy was there to lead and explain what was going to happen to the kids.  She talked about what plants need to grow and how they were going to take care of the garden.  The garden consists of a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The kids were very excited to get their hands dirty!

We started by putting the boards together to make the raised bed.  Then, we had the kids help place newspaper inside of the bed to cover the grass and to prevent weeds from growing. The dirt came next.  The kids jumped right in to help spread the dirt over the newspaper!  We used string to divide up the garden into 16 squares to know which section was going to have the different plants.  Murphy already had made a map of which plants were to be planted in each square.  The kids helped plant everything and enjoyed the experience!

The garden is something that the kids were able to see put together, will be able to help take care of throughout the summer, and watch what they planted grow! Eventually, they will be able to eat the produce from the garden in their meals that they have while at Little Hands.  The kids were good helpers, and enjoyed being a part of their new garden.
