Hey everyone, I’m Madison, and I will be blogging this week and catching everyone up with the activities of the Region 1 Rising Star Interns. You can head on over to the bio page and check out more about all of us if you wish!
What a fun-filled and busy week it was for the Rising Star Interns in Region 1! After our long Memorial Day Weekend, we got right back to work. On Tuesday, we had a luncheon in Primghar with Extension staff in the region and met with other summer educator interns. Marsha can make a mean taco in a bag! Later that evening, we met with the Sioux County Extension Council and introduced ourselves and the goals we have for the summer. We’ve kept busy with a start on our lesson planning for our summer youth programs “Grow! Know! Whoa!”, which will be held at various locations throughout the counties and focus on gardening, nutrition, and food preparation.
Thursday was our first day with our producers we have been individually paired with. I had such a wonderful time with Darla and Michael Eeten of Good Eetens Produce Farm, where they produce a wide array of fruits and vegetables. Here, I spent time in the harvesting and preparing green onions for sale, hoeing and weeding around the start of their sweet corn patch, and of course getting to know Darla and learning about how their large garden got started. I enjoyed the break from the busyness and getting to get out and do manual work!
June is dairy month and we started it out in the perfect way! On Friday, June 01, we took a tour of Stensland’s Dairy Farms and Creamery in Larchwood, Iowa. We all learned something new and a great time was had by all (how can you have a bad time eating ice cream and playing with baby calves?!). Afterwards, we toured Calico Skies, a local winery just outside of Inwood. What a beautiful place! Listen up for us on KDCR 88.5 this week, as we ended our day on Friday by recording a promotional piece for our youth programs.
Look below for some photos from our week! Thanks for reading and don’t forget to check back in next week to see what’s new!
