This past week the Region 1 Interns helped the Little Hands Childcare and Preschool plant their own raised bed garden. Margaret Murphy was there to lead and explain what was going to happen to the kids. She talked about what plants need to grow and how they were going to take care of the garden. This past weekend Region 5 interns, Cali and I (Jade), spent our Saturday morning down at the Sioux City Farmers Market and we had a blast! We had a food tasting for the consumers that were shopping around the market as well as additional informational flyers
The interns of Region 1 and Region 5 gained a new appreciation and knowledge of the work that goes into producing and selling local foods. We spent last Friday morning touring C. The last few weeks have been busy as Jade and I travel throughout our three counties and help them with various tasks that allow us the opportunity to spread information about our wonderful local foods/producers! Last Tuesday the interns of Region 1 and 5 spent the morning touring Kentwood Farms in Webb, Iowa. Kentwood Farms is a locally owned farm where tomatoes are grown by hydroponic farming. Hello again! Another day means another Rising Star adventure! As the weeks go by, we continue to learn more and more about local foods and producers. This week we got the chance to promote them! We were at the Sioux Center Farmers Market on Wednesday June 15 to serve up some local veggies! We call these “Fun with Food Tasting” because its a fun way to try new foods and recipes. On Wednesday, the region 1 Rising Star interns visited Calico Skies Winery, located outside of Inwood, Iowa. The couple that owns and operates the winery and vineyard is Will Kimberley and Ashlee Bahnson-Kimberley. Calico Skies does more than just make wine. They have their own vineyard and are also in the business of hosting weddings, receptions, and other special events. They host all of these events in three different indoor rooms that can be rented out and have an outdoor location as well. It’s almost the end of week three for the rising star interns and I am amazed about how fast these weeks have flown by. Between the farm tours, farmers market visits, seminars, and more we are constantly on the move! The Rising Star interns have had a great time so far working throughout their regions. Region 1 had our first farm tour of the summer. We visited Little Swan Lake Winery out in Estherville, Iowa.
