Little Hands Garden

This past week the Region 1 Interns helped the Little Hands Childcare and Preschool plant their own raised bed garden.  Margaret Murphy was there to lead and explain what was going to happen to the kids.  She talked about what plants need to grow and how they were going to take care of the garden.  The garden consists of a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Sioux City Farmers' Market

Shenanigans in Monona County

The last few weeks have been busy as Jade and I travel throughout our three counties and help them with various tasks that allow us the opportunity to spread information about our wonderful local foods/producers! Visit to Kentwood Farms

Last Tuesday the interns of Region 1 and 5 spent the morning touring Kentwood Farms in Webb, Iowa. Kentwood Farms is a locally owned farm where tomatoes are grown by hydroponic farming. Fun with Food Tasting

Hello again! Another day means another Rising Star adventure! As the weeks go by, we continue to learn more and more about local foods and producers. This week we got the chance to promote them! We were at the Sioux Center Farmers Market on Wednesday June 15 to serve up some local veggies! We call these “Fun with Food Tasting” because its a fun way to try new foods and recipes. Region 1 Tours Calico Skies Winery

On Wednesday, the region 1 Rising Star interns visited Calico Skies Winery, located outside of Inwood, Iowa.  The couple that owns and operates the winery and vineyard is Will Kimberley and Ashlee Bahnson-Kimberley. Calico Skies does more than just make wine.  They have their own vineyard and are also in the business of hosting weddings, receptions, and other special events.  They host all of these events in three different indoor rooms that can be rented out and have an outdoor location as well.  When we first walked in we were greeted with smiling faces and felt very welcomed.   Read more about Region 1 Tours Calico Skies Winery

It’s almost the end of week three for the rising star interns and I am amazed about how fast these weeks have flown by. Between the farm tours, farmers market visits, seminars, and more we are constantly on the move!
