Spotlight on Steven Eilers, Black Hawk County Extension

June 12, 2020

Our spotlight this month is on Steven Eilers, Urban Agriculture Specialist with Black Hawk County Extension.

Steven Eilers head shot.

What do you do as a local food coordinator?

In my job as urban ag specialist, I get the privilege of working with many local producers. We are very lucky to have people who raise and produce everything from eggs and milk products to full-scale fresh produce operations. I love helping promote these local commodities to our local schools and through farmers markets.

How long have you been in the job, and what’s your background?

I am in my third year in this job. With my degree in social work and my years of experience in marketing and my 12 years as a Master Gardener, I get to combine my varied experience in this job.

What are some of your favorite local foods-related projects, past or present?

I have been privileged to work closely with the Waterloo Urban Farmers Market and watch it grow in leaps and bounds every season. What a pleasure to see our market reach so many diverse people.

What new projects or directions are you looking forward to?

We are looking at starting more programs to give people the tools and know-how to raise more of their own food. It’s a project that has been in my head for three years.

What do you love most about your job?

The people I get to meet and the huge diversity of knowledge I get and share every day.

What’s your favorite local food?

Great local cheese curds and delicious fresh meats. You can really taste the difference.
