As a program coordinator for the Community Food Systems Program, Courtney Long manages the development of community food systems around the state of Iowa. She believes that communities can be strengthened and empowered economically and socially through aesthetically designed food systems that contribute to community development strategies.
In addition to the Community Food Systems services that are offered in Iowa, two certifications are also available: Local Food Leader and Community Food Systems. The certification workshops are available nationally with online modules that follow the in-person workshop for complete certification.
Long received her BLA and MS from Iowa State University studying landscape architecture and sustainable agriculture, and has her Certificate of Health Care Garden Design from the Chicago Botanical Gardens. She completed her integrative health coach certificate in May 2015 from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition, with the goal of incorporating nutrition into food systems development. She is currently pursuing a PhD in sustainable agriculture in the department of Community Regional Planning.
