Local Food Leader (LFL) is an individual, skill-building certification for beginning food systems practitioners or those looking to be more engaged in their local food system. This certification teaches foundational competencies critical for successful food systems development, including common language, equity, facilitation and leadership, evaluation, and professional development.

Local Food Leader 101 | Workshop

Local Food Leader 101

Local Food Leader 101 is offered in person or virtually for individuals and community groups. Workshop sections include:

  • Food systems common language
  • Food systems equity
  • Facilitation and leadership
  • Creating plans of work
  • Project and program evaluation
  • Professional development

Participants will receive a certificate of completion in Local Food Leader 101 and are eligible to participate in Local Food Leader 201.

In-person Workshops

In-person workshops are intended for groups of ten or more that are looking to work through curriculum with a place-based focus. In-person workshops can include various engagement and networking opportunities for participants in addition to classroom-style learning.

Fee: $2500 + travel for trainers

Base fee for hosting organization. Includes in-person workshop for up to 20 participants. Excludes travel, lodging, and meal fees for trainers. 

Continuing Education Unit (CEU)

A CEU is a unit of credit that is equal to 10 hours of participation in a certified program designed for professionals that have certificates or licenses to practice certain professions. CEUs are used to provide evidence that an individual completed a non-credit educational course.

  • Credit hours: 1.2
  • Certificate fee: $25
  • Transcript fee: $10

Virtual Workshops

Our virtual workshops are intended for individual participation or groups that will work through curriculum with a national cohort. Virtual workshops provide participants with presentations, readings, and activities that are completed individually and have recorded lessons in the online learning platform, Moodle. Virtual workshops also involve scheduled learning circles through Zoom for cohort engagement. 

Fees:

  • Local Food Leader 101 only: $125
  • Local Food Leader 101 & 201 Bundle: $400

Intercultural Development Inventory® 

Optional Add-on

Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) assesses individuals' and groups’ mindset towards cultural differences and similarities. The IDI training provides a snapshot of individuals' or groups’ approach to cultural differences and commonalities, and includes an individual assessment, profile report, and one-on-one debrief to develop an individual development plan.

Local Food Leader 201 | Online Modules

Local Food Leader 201

Pre-requisite: Local Food Leader 101 Certificate of Completion

The Local Food Leader 201 online modules dive deeper into the topics covered in the LFL 101 workshop. Participants will engage in the following online module sections:

  • Food system types and scales
  • Policy in food systems
  • Coordination and leadership
  • Strategic collaboration and facilitation
  • Project and program tools for food systems development

Participants will receive a certificate of completion in Local Food Leader 201 are are eligible to register for Local Food Leader Train the Trainer.

Delivery Format and Fees

Online modules are housed on the Moodle Online Learning platform. The modules provide presentation, readings, and activities that are completed individually. 

Fees:

  • Local Food Leader 201 only: $300
  • Local Food Leader 101 & 201 bundle: $400

Local Food Leader Train the Trainer

Local Food Leader Train the Trainer

Pre-requisite: Local Food Leader 201 Certificate of Completion

Local Food Leader Train the Trainer is offered annually for Local Food Leader 201-certified individuals. LFL Train the Trainer teaches various facilitation techniques for delivering LFL curriculum and discuss hosting options for revenue generation opportunities. Trained individuals will have the opportunity to host and teach Local Food Leader 101 in their organization or community, and grade online modules for LFL 201 participants. 

Trainer Options and Fees

New trainers have a one-time fee of $200; and following, an annual fee of $100. Returning trainers have an annual fee of $100. Trainers sign an annual agreement form indicating which level of trainer they are choosing for the remainder of the year and will pay the fees as registration for the annual LFL Train the Trainer. 

If you are unable to dedicate time to offering LFL in your community, but would like to stay engaged with the program, there is a cohort-only option with an annual fee of $50. This option includes participation only in the annual LFL Train the Trainer and an additional trainer cohort meeting.

Fees:

  • New trainers: $200
  • Returning trainers: $100, annually
  • Cohort-only: $50, annually
