It is undoubtedly proven in the equine industry that there is a strong relationship between form and function, that is, conformation highly influences performance. Any reputable member of the equine industry, especially the show pony industry, should be able to clarify what they seek in a driving horse. Much like any other industry, there is no “one size fits all” conformation that allows the equine to perform competitively in every discipline. This paper will take a brief look at the desired characteristics of conformation that may be wise to consider when evaluating a driving prospect and the basic differences in conformation between western country pleasure, country pleasure, and pleasure driving divisions in classic Shetlands.
