Horse Fundamentals – No Horse needed!

Are you interested in learning about horses?   Horse Fundamentals is designed for youth in grades 4th to 12th to learn about the horse's essential components. The material can be applied to Hippology, which means the study of the horse.  The Hippology Contest is a comprehensive, skills-based competition in which participants demonstrate the extent of their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry.

Horse Fundamentals will focus on horse anatomy, colors and markings, gaits, and English and Western performance events. Interactive activities will be utilized for the program.

Join Peggy Auwerda, Iowa Equine Extension and Outreach Specialist,  for weekly interactive ZOOM meetings to learn about the horse. Dr. Peggy Auwerda works in the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University. She teaches Equine courses and serves as the Extension and Outreach Equine Specialist. Peggy received her B.S. from Illinois State University in Agricultural Science and her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in Non-Ruminant nutrition. Extension and outreach include work with 4-H youth and adults. She teaches ANS 216: Equine Science and ANS 313: Exercise Physiology of Animals.

  • February 15: Gaits
  • February 22: Gaits and Performance Events
  • February 29: Performance Events
  • March 7: Performance Events

Sessions will be recorded. Participants will have access to a secure folder with the recorded sessions and materials for each session.

The registration fee is $25

The 2024 Hippology contest will be held on April 13 at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
