Preparing for Hippology and Quiz Bowl
Studying for either contest is similar since the reference material is similar. The major difference is Horse Quiz Bowl asks a question and the youth answers, where Hippology asks questions via a written examination, slides, and stations. Practice each time the club meets. Have youth write questions or provide classroom activities.
Horse Fundamentals – No Horse needed!
Are you interested in learning about horses? Horse Fundamentals is designed for youth to learn about the horse's essential components. The material can be applied to Hippology, which means the study of the horse. The Hippology Contest is a comprehensive, skills-based competition in which participants demonstrate the extent of their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry.
Horse Fundamentals will focus on horse anatomy, colors, markings, breeds of horses, gaits, and English and Western performance events. Interactive activities will be utilized for the program.
Horse and Pony | 4-H Youth Development
The Extravaganza
Equine Extravaganza provides opportunities for all youth in grades 4 through 12 to share their knowledge of the equine industry through a variety of competitions and participatory events. Select opportunities are also open to young people in third grade. You do not need to be a member of 4-H to register. As a part of the event, a judge's clinic is also offered. This opportunity is for adults wanting to become certified or re-certified to judge at a county or regional equine shows in Iowa. The 2021 Extravaganza is scheduled for September 24-26 at the Ellsworth Community College Equestrian Center in Iowa Falls.
