Fruit Tree Planting Workshop

Monday, April 22, 2019 - 5:00pm to 6:30pm
Event Type:

Planting a fruit tree on your land is an investment that will provide delicious food for your family for years to come.  But do you know what varieties do best in southeast Iowa?  Do you know how to properly prepare a planting site for a tree, and how to care for a tree once it's been planted?

We will answer all of your fruit tree planting questions in this workshop.  Learn from local Master Gardeners about how to pick a good tree, the best practices for planting fruit trees and how to care for freshly planted trees.  Participants will be invited to take part in site selection, digging a proper hole, adding protective fencing, and mulching the trees, but participating in the hands-on activities is not required.

There is no fee to attend, but pre-registration is required so that we have enough materials for everyone. Please contact Morgan at the Des Moines County Extension & Outreach office to register - mhoenig@iastate.edu or call 319-671-7165

The trees planted during this workshop will be utilized at the Homestead 1839 farm as part of the "Growing Together" donation garden project. Master Gardeners across the state of Iowa are growing fruits and vegetables for the sole purpose of being donated to area food pantries. This garden site will also be a venue for future gardening workshops, so follow Des Moines County Master Gardeners to keep up to date with educational garden activities.cherry tree
