A Chair for Bear

  • What does height and width mean?
  • Measure out 11' x 4'5" to compare the size of Iowa's largest rocking chair
  • Read the book, Goldilocks and the Three Bears by James Marshall
  • Build a chair out of cardboard (in kit).  Cut out the puppets (in kit) to try out your chair
  • Read the book, Forces and Motion by Angela Royston

Popping Popcorn

  • Read the book, Mercy Watson, Something Wonky This Way Comes
  • Make predictions on the scratch paper in your kit - How long does it take a bag of popcorn to pop? How long for the first seed to pop?  How many pieces of popcorn in a bag?  How many seeds won't pop?
  • Pop the popcorn in your kit and keep track of time to compare to your predictions
  • Read the book, Corn by Gail Gibbons
  • Why does popcorn pop?

Bubbles

  • Blow bubbles (in kit) - look at their shapes
  • Make your own bubble wands out of pipe cleaners (in kit) and using them with your bubble solution.  What shapes are your bubbles now?
  • Read the book, Pop! A Book about Bubbles
  • Why are bubbles round?
  • Try combining two or more bubbles

Curious Candy

  • Read the book, Curious George Goes to the Chocolate Factory, by Margret & H.A.Rey's
  • Build a "machine" to move the chocolate in your kit at least 3 feet.  You may use 5 items to build your machine, I have included 2 in your kit (yarn and craft stick) to help you get started
  • Read the book, Cocoa Bean to Chocolate

Wonders of Nature

  • Read the book, Creek finding, A True Story by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, illustrated by Claudia McGehee
  • Using your folded paper in your kit, create 3 columns - walk, sit, fly. Go on a nature hunt in your yard or neighborhood and make a tally mark in the correct column everytime you see a bird!  Total up each column.  Total all 3 columns.
  • Read the book, Goldfinches by Lisa Amstutz
  • Make a bird feeder using the directions and materials in your kit

Marvelous Marshmallows

  • Read the book, A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen
  • Read the letter in your kit
  • Using the cup and balloon make a marshmallow launcher - see video for directions
  • Launch marshmallows (in kit) with your launcher to Mr. Bear (or 3 feet across the room)
  • Read the book, Push and Pull by Patricia J. Murphy
  • Play tic-tac-toe with your mashmallows and the paper in your kit
  • Stack your marshmallows - how tall is your tower?
  • Using the tooth picks in your kit and your marshmallows, create a sculpture
  • Read the book, All About Matter

Super Shapes

  • Using the playdough in your kit, make a circle, square, diamond, star, oval, rectangle
  • Read the book, City Shapes by Diana Murray
  • Go on a shape hunt around your house using the Shape Hut Sheet in your kit.  Make tally marks by the shapes you see.  Tally up each shape
  • Read the book, The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns, illustrated by Gordon Silveria
  • Make shapes with your body!  Have a family member help you!
