Event Highlights

 

What is this event?

This is a hands on educational activity where participants will learn many aspects in relation to landscape pruning.  Topics include pruning hedges, evergreens, trees and identifying proper tree growth habbits.  Topics will also include pruning tool choices and tool sharpening.  Participants will choose thier desired topics to attend, at the event.
 

When is this event?

This event will take place 12:30 pm to 3:45 pm on Saturday, February 29, 2020.  If winter weather prevents us from having a safe event, we will have a snow date of March 7 at the same location, and time of day.
 

Where is this event?

This event will take place at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2155 University Ave., Dubuque, IA 52001.  We will congregate in the fellowship hall north of the main worship space.
 

Is registration and payment required for this event?

This event is $10 per attendee.  Dubuque County Master Gardeners who attend this event will only be charged $5 per attendee.  Event cost goes toward the light warm refreshments being served during warm up breaks between sessions.  Registration for this event is REQUIRED in order to attend and can be done by calling the Dubuque County Extension Office at (563) 583-6496.  The deadline for registration is 12 pm Friday, February 28.  Registration for this event is necessary in the circumstance that we need to contact you about a weather cancellation and rescheduling.  We will also be confirming your attendance a day or so prior to the event.
 

 What you need to bring.

Please come dressed in lots of warm clothes since we will be outside doing our hands on demonstrations.  Since we do not have pruners available for everyone, you will need to bring your own pair of hand pruners or pruning saw along with warm leather gloves.

Event topics availabe at each one of the three sessions.

Below are the four topics available to choose from for the 3 breakout sessions in the agenda above.  Participants will choose their top three topics to attend when they arrive at the workshop.

  • How an arborist sees trees by Steve Pregler - Learn how to determine if a tree a tree is showing signs of weakness.  Also learn the correct form for trees having a central leader system.
  • Pruning trees by Doug Cheever - Learn the correct way to stub cut a tree at the branch collar for optimal wound recovery.  See the importance of sharp pruning saws in cutting a branch.
  • Renovating shrubs by Lisa MacNaughton and Ray Kruse - See the different pruning techniques used on different shrubs that include different evergreens and viburnums.
  • Pruning tool choices and maitenance by Rich Henderson-  We will discuss the different pruning tools available for landscape pruning.  We will also go over proper tool maitenance for optimal perfomance.
