Delco Clover Kiddos Tour Fish Hatchery!

Fish hatchery tour

The Delco Clover Kiddos kicked off the summer by touring the Manchester Fish Hatchery on Saturday, May 4th. Clover Kids were able to get an inside look at the hatchery from Dan Rosauer, Manchester Trout Hatchery Manager.

Dan took the Clover Kids around the Fish Hatchery and shared many interesting facts about the fish and the purpose of the hatchery. Youth learned about the types of fish and the water they live in. They were able to see all different sizes of trout and how they are moved to different tanks around the hatchery. Clover Kids even got to see some fish eggs and how they hatch.

After the tour, youth fed the fish.  Clover Kids were amazed to see fish splashing at the surface of the water to get their food.  Clover Kids also spent some time learning about the different parts of a fish by playing “Name that Part” and helping fill out a fish diagram. After they learned about the parts of a fish, youth constructed their own fish with various material and labeled its parts.

The last part of the meeting was spent talking about the 2019 Delaware County Fair. Clover Kids have many opportunities to participate in at the fair this year. They will get an inside tour of the Fairgrounds, with stops at several livestock barns to talk with 4-H members about their projects. Clover Kids can participate in a Project Showcase where they can bring one project they have made and share it with a judge. Clover Kids also have an opportunity to participate in the new Clover Kids Pet Show. They can bring one pet to the fair to be judged during the show.  These opportunities will be available for all Clover Kids in Delaware County.  The Extension Office has put together resources that can be found on our website at extension.iastate.edu/delaware/4h.
