Student Finances and Loan Repayment

A diploma in hand, job applications, and interviews also mean setting up student loan repayment. Graduates can learn tips for managing their loans from the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau.

The information available on the site in combination with data provided by the financial aid office of a graduate’s college or university will help borrowers make informed decisions. New graduates, as well as those who currently have repayment plans, can enter their financial information on the secure site and receive a summary of repayment options.

The Student Aid Bill of Rights, passed in 2015, resulted in collaboration between the US Department of Education, US Department of Treasury, and the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau to examine student loans and recommend modifications. Special emphasis was placed on increasing options for repayment for individuals who are more likely to default.  An original repayment plan for federal loans can be modified. Private student loan options vary.

It’s important to take responsibility to repay student loans. Social Security income can be withheld for repayment and the loans cannot be resolved with bankruptcy actions.
