3 Easy Steps to Eating Healthy on a Budget

As students and their families prepare for another busy school year, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has resources to help families eat healthy and stick to a tight grocery budget.  All it takes is a little planning and using the tips and easy recipes on our Spend Smart. Eat Smart. website, https://spendsmart.extension.iastate.edu/

Step #1 PLAN- Set your family up for success by planning meals and snacks in a way that works for your family, your budget and your schedule.  The website includes tools that will help with meal planning and allow you to look at what you are spending now and how you can make small changes that add up to big savings.

Step #2 SHOP-Healthy eating starts at the store.  Resources on the website will help you find nutritious items at the grocery store aisle-by-aisle while comparing unit prices. Reading food labels will ensure you get the best buy.

Step #3 COOK-If you want to eat healthy and stick to a budget, the best thing you can do is cook at home as often as possible.  Home cooked meals are typically healthier and less expensive than pre-packaged or restaurant meals.  Cooking doesn’t have to be a chore, the website includes resources to help you set yourself up for success in the kitchen, including how-to videos and easy, tasty recipes!

The website is also now available as a FREE mobile app you can take with you to the grocery store!  Just download it from your app store!
