Get Help with Free Income Tax Preparation

PERRY- - Low-to-moderate income individuals and families needing assistance with filing their 2023 income taxes can receive free help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program available in Dallas County this year. The VITA program offers free basic tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualifying families and individuals with incomes of $64,000 or less, persons with disabilities, limited English speakers, older adults, and veterans.

A VITA intake site will make services available in English and Spanish, thanks to partnership efforts between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Central College, and the Iowa Center for Economic Success. The VITA program begins on February 6th and runs through April 9th on Tuesdays from 2:30- 7 p.m. at the Perry Public Library (1101 Willis Ave).

According to Rosa Gonzales of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, “With the intake site, taxpayers meet with me to verify their identification, complete paperwork, and submit their tax documents. Central College students who passed IRS tax prep certifications, and work under the supervision of Associate Professor of Accounting, Maggie Schlerman, then prepare the tax returns. Once the tax return is complete and ready to review, usually within two weeks, the taxpayer will sign the return and then we will electronically file state and federal tax returns for free.”

Tax payers must bring Social Security cards for taxpayers and all dependents, photo identification, a copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns , and all relevant tax forms, like wage and earning statement(s) from all employers for each year you are filing (Form W2,W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc, SSA 1099), interest and dividend statements (Form 1099), total paid for day care provider and the day care provider’s tax identifying number (the provider’s Social Security number or the provider’s business Employer Identification Number), and bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit.
