Andrea Nelson is the interim program leader for the 4-H Youth Development program of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. She began the position in August 2018. Under Andrea’s leadership, 4-H Youth Development at Iowa State University will continue its long and successful record of engaging young people across the state.

Professional Experience

Andrea brings more than 15 years of experience building working relationships with individuals and groups inside and outside of ISU Extension and Outreach. Before becoming interim 4-H program leader, Andrea served as Region 13 director covering Dallas, Polk, Madison and Warren counties. In that role she provided leadership to county extension councils and oversaw delivery of regional educational programs that align with needs of the region. Andrea has experience with both urban and rural counties and has served on numerous state committees. In her previous role as executive director for Polk County, she brought change and transformation that aligned with the goals and mission of ISU Extension and Outreach. She has much experience writing successful grants and contracts for educational programming in Region 13. She also served as Polk County’s office manager, county youth coordinator, personnel manager, and 4-H internal program coordinator.


Andrea received a bachelor’s degree in geology and geophysics from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and a master’s in public administration from Drake University.
