What do you do for ISU Community and Economic Development Extension and Outreach?

I supervise campus based staff as they implement their research based programming and support for communities. Also, I provide overall support for staff and faculty in the program as part of the administrative leadership team. In conjunction with Professional Development staff, I lead our efforts to deliver the Navigating Difference Cultural Competency Training to community based organizations and businesses. Finally, I am a one of several staff who is available to facilitate consensus workshops, action planning, and strategic planning.

What is the best part of your job?

Working with talented community development professionals who are impactful in communities across the state.

Name one fun thing about yourself that not many people know.

I can remember and sing several of the candy bar jingles from the 1970’s and 1980’s television commercials.

What do you do in your spare time?

I am a certified group fitness instructor and teach RPM spin, Body Pump, Body Flow, and SPRINT High Intensity Interval Training on a bike. I am a clarinetist and play a little guitar and saxophone. Finally, I am preparing for the next session of the Iowa General Assembly in my new role as State Representative in House District 46 (Ames).

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in this position?

Continue to increase the knowledge and ability of our team to be inclusive in their work to enhance communities.

I provide professional development and support for our teams that enhances their skills as they provide service to communities across the state.

What have you been up to lately (in your job)?

Preparing our team to train Bankers Trust employees on the Navigating Difference Cultural Competency Training. I’m leading a Train-the-Trainers certification on Navigating Difference for teams from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Purdue, University of Illinois, Kansas State University, and Clemson University. Recently, I have been added to the Leading Communities training team.
