Clayton County 4-H and FFA members sold a total of $412,829 worth of livestock at the county fair auction on Monday, August 7. The sale was under the direction of auctioneers, Jerry Maker, Strawberry Point, Mike Monroe, Postville and Mike Loecke, Manchester. Representatives from Luana Savings Bank and Central State Bank clerked the sale. Free destination hauling was provided by Lembke-Hageman Trucking, Ryan Rose, Doug Sass, Werger Trucking, Edgewood Locker, and Travis Preim.
The top three buyers were Allen Real Estate Company, Monona; Joe Shirbroun-Pioneer Seeds, Farmersburg; and Luana Savings Bank, Luana.
The average price of 92 head of market beef was $2.49 per pound. The top 3 selling market beef were sold at $4.00 per pound by Nate Shirbroun, Farmersburg to Luana Savings Bank, Luana, Nolan Gaul, Strawberry Point to Larry Gaul, and Ty Berns, St Olaf to Joe Shirbroun, Farmersburg. 112 head of swine sold for an average price of $2.39 per pound. The top selling pig was sold by Rachel Eglseder, Edgewood, to Mark Short Concrete, Greeley for $5.25 per pound. 18 head of sheep averaged $3.00 per pound. Nolan Gaul, Strawberry Point, sold the top selling lambs to Larry Gaul for $5.00 per pound. 19 meat goats averaged $3.99 per pound. Jacob Schilling, Colesburg sold the top selling meat goat to Harold Schilling, Colesburg for $8.00 per pound.
In addition to the beef, hogs, goats, and lambs, the exhibitors also sold meat rabbits and poultry at the county fair auction. The top selling rabbit lots were $120 per rabbit sold by Erin Hauser, Elkader to Janine Berns, St Olaf, and Alexis Hickson, Edgewood to Silveredge Coop, Edgewood. The top poultry lot sold was Nate Shirbroun, Farmersburg for $600 to Brian Kann, Channel Seed.
