4-H Beef Bonanza returns March 23 in Emmetsburg


Beef Bonanza

Beef Bonanza returns Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Iowa Lakes Community College - Emmetsburg Campus (3200 College Drive, Emmetsburg). Registration opens at 9:45 a.m.

Local youth are invited to attend Beef Bonanza, a beef cattle focused day of learning, hosted by ISU Extension and Outreach. Youth will attend the following four sessions and eat lunch:

  • Guardians of Health: Preventing Disease in the Beef Herd - You can do many things to ensure your cattle stay healthy. In this workshop, you will discover tools you can use to protect your herd and learn about the dangers of misusing certain medications.
  • Happy Herds: Nurturing Well-Being in Beef Production - What is animal abuse, and how do I know if I am crossing the line as a beef producer? In this workshop, you will learn about the five freedoms of animal care and some questions you can ask yourself to make sure that you and those around you are properly caring for your beef animals.
  • Beeflicious Beef - Information to come!
  • Genetic Traits: Treasure or Trash - This session features common genetic defects in breeding heifers, how the defect is inherited, and how to select heifers that do not carry “bad” genes.

Parents/guardians are welcome to attend and learn with their children.

  • 12:10 p.m. Lunch
  • 12:40 p.m. Session 3

  • 2:30 p.m. YQCA Post-Test & Evaluation
  • 2:45 p.m. Wrap Up
  • 3:00 p.m. Adjourn

4-H and FFA members who attend all day will be YQCA certified.
