The potato, one off the most important vegetable crops in the world, is available in cultivars of many shapes, sizes and colors. There are over 1,000 different varieties of potatoes that can be grown in home gardens, including many heirloom potatoes. The texture and flavor are very different from variety to variety. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach horticulturists offer guidance on selecting varieties for Iowa and proper planting.   • Participate in these classes for child care providers focused on healthy, affordable food choices and physical activities for children. Department of Human Services-approved credit is available for those attending.

  • Buy. Eat. Live Healthy

    The Buy. Eat. Live Healthy is a free program that help parents provide nutritious food for their families, leading to healthy children and strong families

  • The number of overweight children (ages 6-11) has almost quadrupled in the past four decades and for adolescents (12-19) has tripled. This series of handouts is designed to help parents, communities, and childcare providers address the overweight issue.
