Home-based Food Operation Workshop - April 27th

The state of Iowa has specific laws and regulations related to food that is prepared at home and sold direct to consumers. This workshop includes both online and face-to-face sessions that will guide you through regulations and the best food safety practices to ensure safe handling of your product from the kitchen to the point of sale. This workshop is open to anyone ages 18 years or older.

Course Modules

All participants must complete all modules in order to receive a certificate of completion:

  • Module 1*: Iowa Policies & Regulations (available online Fall 2018 to registered participants)
  • Module 2: Food Safety Basics, Non Temperature Control for Safety (TCS) Foods and Temperature Control for Safety (TCS) Foods
  • Module 3: Foodborne Pathogens
  • Module 4: Safe Food Practices in the Kitchen
  • Module 5: Safe Food Practices during Food Preparation 
  • Module 6: Safe Food Practices during Packaging and at the Point of Sale

*New fall 2018, Module 1: Iowa Policies & Regulation lecture and assessment will be made available online for all registered participants. The online access to the module allows participants to review the Iowa regulations and prepare for the face-to-face workshop ahead of time. Instructors will review this module with participants during the first phase of the face-to-face workshop.
The workshop is led by Dr. Shannon Coleman, an assistant professor and state extension specialist for the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and Human Sciences Extension and Outreach.This course was specifically designed for residents of the state of Iowa. If you are outside of Iowa, please check your local state rules and certification requirements.
