AMES, Iowa — Iowans can build skills to improve their finances with a free online course from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
“Take Control of Your Money makes it possible to learn core financial skills at the time and place that best suits your needs,” said Barb Wollan, an ISU Extension and Outreach family finance specialist who manages the course.
Instructions for enrolling in the course are online at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/families/take-control.
Take Control of Your Money participants work their way through the basic money management process, Wollan said.
“You’ll learn how to identify goals and priorities and make a spending a plan. You’ll also learn what you need to do to follow that plan,” she said.
The course is completely flexible, Wollan continued. Participants can choose which components to use and which to skip, and are free to work through the sections of the course in any order.
The course includes short, recorded presentations, print material, sample financial management tools, links to publications and a few quizzes. It covers key money management steps, as well as reducing debt, building security and communicating about money with family members.
“Participants should plan to be involved in the course for at least a month to fully try out the tools and practice the strategies. However, you are free to move through the content as quickly as you wish,” Wollan said.
Wollan recommends participants stay enrolled in the course for a couple of months, so they can come back to the website and see what is new.
