Youth team earns top honors at Aksarben Stock Show

Franklin County AKSARBEN Livestock Quiz Bowl Championship teamAMES, Iowa – “A decrease in performance which results from mating related animals is called what?” This is just one of the many questions the Franklin County 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl team was asked during their quiz bowl competition at the 2017 AKSARBEN 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl Contest in Grand Island, Neb.

The team, comprised of Jaiden Shahan, Lane Abbas and Isaac Vosburg, answered their way through six rounds of questions to win top honors against 12 other teams from across the United States. Shahan was named the high individual in the contest for correctly answering more questions than any other contestant.

“Livestock quiz bowl helps youth develop decision making, problem solving, critical thinking, self-confidence and teamwork skills.” said Franklin County Youth Coordinator and team coach, Jackie Dohlman. The livestock quiz bowl tests knowledge of beef, goat, sheep and swine and covers all of the science areas from genetics to nutrition.

Iowa 4-H will host its first state livestock quiz bowl contest in March 2018. The contest is open to youth ages 10-19 and will be held at Iowa State University. For more information, contact Amy Powell at ampowell@iastate.edu.
