Allamakee County 4-H Dairy Judging Teams Compete at the 2019 Iowa State Fair

Dairy Judging Contestants

In dairy judging, youth evaluate classes of dairy cows and heifers and then defend their placings through oral reasoning. Youth learn the dairy cow unified scorecard and major breakdowns, anatomy of the dairy cow, along with dairy judging terminology.  Allamakee County had ten 4-H’ers represented at the State 4-H Dairy Judging contest held at the Iowa State Fair.  They made up two teams, one Junior Division and one Senior Division. 
The following youth participated; Senior members included Michael Hagen, son of Erik and Lisa Hagen of Waterville; Faith Palmer daughter of John and Meghan Palmer of Waukon; Claire Opperman, daughter of George and Amy Opperman of Waukon; Madalyn Palmer and Emma Palmer daughters of Eric and Stephanie Palmer of Waukon.  Junior participants were Kiele Eberling, daughter of Kevin and Donna Eberling of Postville; Ariana Menne, daughter of Sara and Jason Menne of Postville, Dalton Ellickson, son of Lee and Chris Ellickson of Waukon; Ethan Palmer, son of John and Meghan Palmer of Waukon and Keagan Palmer, son of Eric and Stephanie Palmer of Waukon.  The Dairy Judging teams were coached by Aaron Palmer and Lars Sivesind of Waukon, Iowa. 
The Junior contest involved 22 individuals and 6 teams representing counties from Allamakee, Delaware, Fayette and Winneshiek. 
Allamakee Junior Team placed second overall and in Team Reasons. The team also placed first in Jersey, second in Milking Shorthorn Divisions.  Team individual highlights; Kiele Eberling, sixth in Ayrshire, tenth in Holstein, second in Milking Shorthorn, fifth in Reasons and eighth Overall.  Ethan Palmer ninth in Ayrshire, seventh Brown Swiss, fifth Guernsey, third Holstein, second Jersey, first Milking Shorthorn, third in Reasons and third Overall. Keagan Palmer eighth in Brown Swiss, fourth Jersey, tenth Milking Shorthorn, and eighth in Reasons.
The Senior Division had 8 teams and 29 individuals representing Allamakee, Delaware, Dubuque and Fayette counties.
Allamakee’s Senior Team placed second in Holstein and Jersey.  Individual placings; Emma Palmer third Ayrshire and ninth in Holstein.  Madi Palmer sixth in Brown Swiss, eighth Holstein, second Jersey, seventh Milking Shorthorn, ninth in Reasons, and sixth overall. Faith Palmer third in Holstein.  Claire Opperman fifth Jersey.
The Dairy Judging team worked with Winneshiek county during practices.  They would like to thank the host farms that invited them in to practice judging on their dairy cattle.  Thank you to the parents and drivers for all the encouragement along the way.
