Volunteer Opportunity to Help Iowans
In 4-H, we pledge our hands to larger service. During this time, 4-H is needed even more. Food pantries in your local community are looking to Iowa 4-H is assist.
Make a difference in your community by ensuring all Iowans are able to have access to the food they need to survive! Food banks, food pantries and congregate meal and delivery programs around Iowa are working tirelessly to provide food to children, at-risk families, and senior citizens. Iowa has a 65% increase in demand for food assistance across Iowa during the COVID-19 crisis. Over one third of Iowa’s volunteers are 55+, and at higher risk of contracting and becoming seriously ill from COVID-19. This has contributed to a significant decrease in volunteer resources.
Find volunteer needs in your community by visiting http://volunteeriowa.galaxydigital.com/, clicking on “COVID-19 Food Distribution Opportunities” and searching by zip code. Or you can find your local food pantry by searching for your county on this map, visiting the website for that food bank and searching for the food pantry in your community.
Before volunteering, please review guidelines for volunteering during the COVID-19 crisis, follow all safety protocols in place at the food bank or food pantry when volunteering. Monetary donations and donations of non-perishable foods and hygiene products are being accepted at most food banks and food pantries.
As Iowans deal with disruptions to their families and communities, these resources from Human Sciences Extension and Outreach provide information to help you cope with concerns about healthy eating, relationships, mental health and wellbeing, personal finance, food safety, and nutrition and wellness.
