Coping with a disaster can be difficult for children and their families, says Lesia Oesterreich, a family life state specialist with by Text-Enhance">Iowa State University Extension.
Children may have many different reactions. “Children may become upset or cry easily, get angry or act out, become restless or have difficulty paying attention,” she said. “Some children may be quiet and withdrawn, while others can’t stop talking about the experience.”

Giving to grandchildren doesn’t have to involve money or gift-wrapped packages. As the grandkids head back to school, consider sharing nutrition tips or a love for lifelong learning, said Malisa Rader, a family life program specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. These types of gifts, along with taking an interest in children’s school activities, can contribute to their success in school.
