Iowa State University (ISU) Extension-Woodbury County graduated 19 from their fall master gardener class during their awards and graduation ceremony.
The 2009 fall master gardener class graduates included Sue Bailey, Suzan E. Boden, Judie Hayward, Judy K. Mullen, Dennis Pastian, Elizabeth Pavone, and Janice Sampson all of Sioux City, Robert Baxter of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Carolyn Coughlin and Renate Reiss Rosentrader of Dakota City, Neb., Carol Ann Hagen of Jefferson, S.D., Nancy L. Harder of Ponca, Neb., Janeal Holmes of Mapleton, Iowa, Mary Konopasek of Remsen, Iowa, Jo Martin of Hinton, Iowa, Pam Miller of Homer, Neb., Sandra Odle of North Sioux City, S.D., Pam Vickers of Salix, Iowa, and Rebecca White of Hornick, Iowa.
These graduates have the status of master gardener intern until they complete 40 hours of volunteer service on garden related projects in the community.
Receiving special recognition for their dedication to the master gardener program was Megan Will, Sioux City, and Pat Shanahan of McCook Lake, S.D. Will and Shanahan were recognized for each giving 1,000 hours of service as Woodbury County Extension master gardeners. (Pat and Megan are pictured.)
Receiving recognition for 40 hours of community service and official certification as an ISU Extension master gardener were Pat Basye, Marge Giese, Joan Guillaume, Alicia Martindale, Julie McElhany, Kay Metz, Michelle Molstad, Terri Post, Mark Raymond, Lori Stuck, Rex Towns, Dave Treft, Teresa Ullrich, and Judy VandeZandschulp all of Sioux City, Janet Dorale-Hampf of Lawton, Iowa, Ethel Krosch of Kingsley, Iowa, Doris Shoultz of Hinton, Iowa, Terry Waugh of Moville, Iowa, and Rebecca Zimmerman of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
Class coordinators for the ISU Extension master gardener class in Woodbury County are Woodbury County Extension Horticulturist Mimi Shanahan and volunteers Megan Will and Pat Shanahan.
In 2008, master gardeners contributed over 3,107 volunteer hours of their horticulture skills to Siouxland, a labor donation of nearly $52,353 to our Woodbury County communities. Community gardening projects have included the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center, Latham Park, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, the June E. Nylen Cancer Center and others. Plus, volunteers answer horticulture questions when area residents call into Woodbury County Extension. Master Gardeners also assist in planning and implementing the Siouxland Garden Show.
