Through a partnership between Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach, University of Nebraska Extension, Up From the Earth, and Dakota County Voices for Food, Soil to Supper: Garden for Food will teach you how to grow your own vegetables, improve your soil, begin composting, implement food safety practices, manage pests and disease, as well as how you can grow an extra row to share with food pantries in Siouxland. This free all-day workshop will take place Saturday, February 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the ISU Extension and Outreach – Woodbury County offices, located at 4728 Southern Hills Drive in Sioux City.

Local foods are making an economic impact in Iowa. In fact, sales of food produced in northwest Iowa added $312,441 to the local economy in 2012 as reported by eighteen farmers in the northwest region.

Statewide Resources

  • Participate in these classes for child care providers focused on healthy, affordable food choices and physical activities for children. Department of Human Services-approved credit is available for those attending.

  • The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), Family Nutrition Program (FNP), and Loving Your Family-IA  are FREE programs that help parents provide nutritious food for their families, leading to healthy children and strong families

  • The number of overweight children (ages 6-11) has almost quadrupled in the past four decades and for adolescents (12-19) has tripled. This series of handouts is designed to help parents, communities, and childcare providers address the overweight issue.
