4-H Showcase Spotlight of the Week

Smiles to our 4-H FFI youth who attended the FFI 4-H Youth/Adult FEEST (Food Empowerment Education and Sustainability Team) last Friday. These youth members worked together to prepare a delicious, healthy meal while learning about the local food community. Members also led discussions with local community members and school board members.

Last Chance Reminders

4-H Clothing Event

Start your clothing adventure! Winneshiek County 4-H in partnership with Maurices Clothing Store will be putting on a 4-H Clothing Workshop on Saturday, April 12 from 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Decorah Lutheran Church. Members will learn tips and tricks for color matching, selecting outfits, 4-H clothing judging, writing script cards and runway shows. Please contact the Winneshiek County Extension Office by Friday, April 11, 2014 if you plan to attend. The cost is $5 per person.

New 4-H Highlights for the week

Enrollment Update – as of 4/10/14

2013-2014 4-H Members: 253 4-H members, 52 clover kid members, and 30 4-H volunteers

Goal: 315 members (4th – 12th grade)

Food Safety Quality Assurance (FSQA) Training

4-H members showing Beef, Dairy, Goats, Poultry, Rabbits, Sheep, and Swine at the County Fair or State Fair will need to be FSQA certified. We have one additional FSQA Training for 2014 coming up on Tuesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. at the Danan Lansing Building. Please RSVP to the Winneshiek County Extension Office the Friday before the scheduled training.

Market Lamb & Meat Goat Weigh-in

The Market Lamb and Meat Goat Weigh-in will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds. The cost will be $2.00 per animal weighed in. There are additional fees for State Fair and AK-SAR-BEN. If you are planning to exhibit at the Iowa State Fair, you MUST contact the Extension Office by Friday, May 2, to make arrangements to have your market lambs or meat goats retinal imaged.

Winneshiek County Fair 4-H/FFA Fair Book and Forms

The 2014 Fair Book is now available. 4-H club leaders may pick up the fair books and forms at the Extension Office. Families will receive fair packets from club leaders in April. Please be sure to take a close look at the fair book as there have been some significant changes. 4-H Highlights from the previous week(s):

Dog Obedience Classes

4-H Dog Obedience Classes will be starting the first Sunday in May. New members are asked to call Beth Einck at 563-382-3989 for more information. Members who participated last year will be getting an email with more information.

4-H’ers for 4-H

The annual “4-H’ers for 4-H Campaign” has begun for 2014. The State 4-H Council is encouraging each 4-H Club in Iowa to donate a goal of $2.50 per 4-H member to this campaign. Please submit your campaign donations to the Winneshiek County Extension Office by May 15. Winneshiek County Fair 4-H T-Shirts

4-H members exhibiting at the Winneshiek County Fair, livestock and non-livestock, will need to purchase our 2014 Winneshiek County 4-H t-shirt. This year’s shirt design is listed below. T-shirts for 4-H members will be $2.00 for the first t-shirt. Any additional t-shirts will be $4.00. Please contact your 4-H Leader by May 15 to place your order.

Iowa 4-H Youth Conference

It’s not too early to start thinking about the upcoming Iowa 4-H Youth Conference. “Ticket to Success” and attend the conference from June 24-26, 2014 in Ames. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show! Join over 1000 teenagers on the Iowa State University Campus for 3 full days of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. Mark the dates on the calendar and plan to attend this incredible conference.

Area 4-H Camps

It’s time to think about summer, warmer temperatures, and registering for area camp being held at Pinebluff 4-H camp near Decorah. Junior campers, youth currently 4th-6th grade will “Imagine, Explore, Inspire!” while exploring the campgrounds, enjoying fun activities, and meeting other 4-Hers! Camp dates are June 9-10 or June 12-13. Cost for camp is $65. “Charting Your Course For Adventure” is waiting for Intermediate campers, youth currently in grades 7-8. Camp dates are June 17-19 and cost is $80.

Area 4-H Camp Counselors Needed

High school students (grades 9 - 12) interested in serving as camp counselors should check their summer calendars and fill out a camp counselor application. Junior Camps will be held June 9-10, and June 12-13. Intermediate Camp will be held June 17-19. Applications are available at the Extension Office and are due by April 15, 2014. Attendance is expected at the Camp Counselor Training. Training is currently scheduled for Thursday, June 5, 2014.

2014 4-H Fair Theme

The theme for the county fair will be “Ticket to Success!” Although fair is still months away, clubs are encouraged to start working on getting booth decorating ideas together. The 2014 Winneshiek County Fair will be held July 8 – 12, 2014.
