The Annual Spring Field Day at the Borlaug Learning Center features many topics.  Discussion will be held on corn growth and development from the planting date trials and expectations on pollination.  Updates on crop and soil fertility issues from the drought in 2012 to the late start in 2013, nitrogen management, sulfur and micronutrient recommendations, weed control challenges, weed resistance management and updates on the latest plant diseases.

Results from the most recent survey of farmland rental rates conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach showed that the average estimated cash rent for corn and soybean land in the state for 2013 was $270 per acre, an increase of $18 per acre or 7 percent from last year.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today reminded eligible farm owners that the deadline to apply for the 2013 Century and Heritage Farm Program is June 1, 2013. The program recognizes families that have owned their farm for 100 years in the case of Century Farms and 150 years for Heritage Farms.

Research has long told us that consumers view the meat case as a “sea of red” and are increasingly confused about fresh meat cuts. As a result, they tend to only purchase the 3 or 4 cuts they are most familiar with. The Beef Checkoff, in partnership with the National Pork Board, spent more than 18 months conducting research to learn how to help consumers understand the beef and pork cuts they see in the meat case.
