Are you interested in home landscaping, gardening, or horticulture in general? Then you need to know about these upcoming classes. All classes are being held in Hancock or Cerro Gordo Counties and are approved for 2 hours of Master Gardener recertification.

 

Has it been awhile since you took the Master Gardener classes and you haven’t kept your service and recertification training hours up? Not a problem – It’s never too late! Call your local Extension office and find out about obtaining or reinstating your MG certification. Then check out these offerings to learn and meet other North Iowa hort enthusiasts.

Saturday, February 5 – Dr. Ann Marie VanDerZanden, ISU horticulture associate professor, presents A Landscape Design Primer for Homeowners. The session will be held at the Hancock County Extension office from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Dr. VanDerZanden will present landscape composition, including site planning and analysis, and landscape design styles. Register through Hancock County Extension Office 641-923-2856; fee $10. Registration deadline Jan. 28.

Thursday, February 10 Chuck Hall, ISU Extension North Central Iowa Horticulturist and other Master Gardeners present Plant Propagation at the 4-H Learning Center, North Iowa Fairgrounds. Bring a plant(s) to be propagated for a hands-on learning experience. Register through Cerro Gordo Extension Office, 641-423-0844; free to 2004 Master Gardener Interns, fee $15 for Master Gardeners, $20 for others.

 

Saturday, March 5 - Two local landscape architects, Dave Hopper, Natural Plus Nursery, a Master Gardener and a certified nurseryman for 27 years and Bob Satter, RGS Design Studio, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Site Design, a Master Gardener intern with over 30 years of urban planning and landscape architecture experience) share creative ideas and experiences related to Home Landscape Plant Groupings and Selections beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Hancock County Extension office. Register through Hancock County Extension Office 641-923-2856; fee $10.

 

Thursday, March 31 – Bill Johnson, DNR Prairie Seed Harvest Biologist, presents information on selecting and growing native prairie grasses and flowers, beginning at 6:30 pm. at the 4-H Learning Center at the North Iowa Fairgrounds. Following his presentation, Johnson and Master Gardener Intern Jack Eno will answer questions.  Sign up for a tour of natural as well as restored native prairies led by Jack Eno at a later date. Saturday, April 2 – Richard Jauron, Iowa State University Extension Hortline expert, presents information on shade gardening beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Hancock County Extension office. Following the gardening presentation, Jauron will answer general home horticulture questions. Register through Hancock County Extension Office 641-923-2856; fee $10.

 

Thursday, May 5 - Bill Rowland, Education Coordinator for the Landfill of North Iowa, will present information on composting and recycling and will have free samples of black gold (compost) from their composting facility.  The presentation will begin at 6:30 PM at the Landfill.  We will also be conducting a plant exchange.  Bring plant divisions to share or trade. Register through Cerro Gordo Extension Office, 641-423-0844; free to 2004 Master Gardener Interns, fee $15 for Master Gardeners, $20 for others.

These classes fulfill the 2005 Master Gardener trainee hours and are open to others for Master Gardener recertification hours.
