Upcoming July FEFE Workshop to Train Teachers in Financial Literacy
AMES, Iowa – Summer vacation is beginning for students, but for their teachers, the learning isn’t over. Those who attend the Family Economics and Financial Education (FEFE) workshop will gain updated information and creative classroom activities on financial literacy to share with their students next school year.
This will be the third year Iowa State University has offered the three-day workshop. This year the workshop will be held July 24 –26 at the Scheman Building on campus.
“There is a demand for financial literacy training among teachers and school counselors,” said Iowa State University Professor and Extension and Outreach Specialist Cynthia Needles Fletcher. “The FEFE curriculum training gives teachers the tools and confidence to teach financial literacy skills to students.”
The trainings focus on the semester-long middle and high school FEFE curriculum that is supported by the faculty and staff at the Take Charge America Institute for Consumer Financial Education and Research at the University of Arizona. The workshop will feature hands-on activities and keynote presentations by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission staff and Craig Goettsch, director of investor education and securities counsel with the Iowa Insurance Division.
“This workshop is for middle and high school educators who are responsible for teaching financial literacy in any capacity,” said Fletcher. “The teachers receive useful, up-to-date information and learn useful teaching techniques for helping students develop financial literacy skills. The workshop is taught by master teachers who have been involved in the design of the curriculum, which resonates well with those attending the conference and makes for a fun and educational atmosphere.”
Katy Paul, a family and consumer sciences teacher from North Sentral Kossuth High School attended the workshop in 2011.
“In the past, I found from both personal and professional perspectives that teachers receive little formal education in finance,” she said. “Many teachers are not confident with all of the concepts of financial literacy and rely on personal experiences to teach their students. The FEFE curriculum gives teachers like myself the knowledge, which turns into confidence, to teach students relevant financial literacy skills.”
